Day 1. Beijing
You are collected from the airport (our driver will have a “China & Beyond” signboard), transfer to the hotel. We will start by exploring Beijing’s past by embarking on a ‘Hutong neighbourhood by rickshaw tour.’ Our slow pace will allow us to soak in the narrow streets or alleys that date back hundreds of years. It is a stark contrast to Beijing’s modern buildings that today dominate the skyline. Thankfully, some old hutong areas have received ‘special status’ by the government and are carefully preserved. (D)
Day 2. Beijing
Everyone has heard of Tiananmen Square, the symbol of Beijing, but nothing can prepare you for the impact - located in the centre of the city, it is the fourth largest city square in the world covering 440,000 square metres. After, you will visit the famous Imperial palace and the Forbidden City, listed by UNESCO as the biggest collection of preserved antiquated wooden constructions in the world. Home to Chinese emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Palace is home to one of the most important collections of Chinese artwork in the world. Later on you will visit the magnificent Summer Palace for a relaxing time spent exploring Chinese landscape garden design. In the evening, we get to tuck into a hearty dinner of roasted duck. (B,L,D)
Day 3. Beijing
Today is a real highlight: you will get to visit the Badaling section of the Great Wall situated in Yanqing County, approximately 70 kilometres (44 miles) north of Beijing. A symbol of Chinese civilisation and one of the wonders of the world it is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The highest point of the Wall in this part is 1015m (3300ft), offering great views. Afterwards, we will visit the site of the 2008 for the Summer Olympics and will see the Olympic Green and park, including the famous ‘Bird’s nest’ building. In the evening, marvel at one of Beijing finest Acrobatic Shows. (B,L,D)
Day 4. Beijing - Xian
A slice of modern China today as after a transfer to the Beijing West railway station, you’ll catch the morning bullet train to Xian. This new high-speed train covers the distance of 711 miles from Beijing to Xian in only 4h and 40min. On arrival you will be met and transferred to the hotel, then you’ll start your Xian city tour. One of the four ancient capitals of China, we begin with the Big Goose Pagoda, a seven-storey Buddhist temple built in the 7th century (great views from the top) and the Little Goose Pagoda. Other attractions include the Bell Tower and the Great Mosque, one of the first Mosques built in China. Lunch afterwards and in the evening a Tang Dynasty Singing and Dancing Show with dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 5. Xian
Arguably the most famous tourist attraction in China, today we will get to visit the Terracotta Army, which draws millions of tourists every year. Accidentally discovered in 1974 by local farmers working in the fields, you will examine the pits, walk up the burial mound of the emperor, and see the thousands of terracotta statues of warriors and horses depicting the army of the First Chinese Emperor. Afterwards, our driver will meet you in the hotel lobby and will take you on to Xian railway station. Tonight will be a comfortable adventure aboard the train to Shanghai (a choice of 2 and 4 berth compartments available). (B,L,D)
Day 6. Shanghai
Today you’ll arrive in China’s most exciting city, Shanghai. Our driver will meet you off the train and take you to the hotel to leave your luggage. Our city tour today will explore the city’s highlights including: the Shanghai Museum, People’s Square and Bund. As the largest and busiest city in China there is a lot to take in. The People’s square is located in the heart of the city as is the Shanghai Museum, the place to learn about Chinese arts like calligraphy as well as ceramics and furniture. The Bund is a mile-long riverside promenade with dozens of European-style buildings. (B,L,D)
Day 7. Shanghai
For today’s tour, there will be a gentle start in old Shanghai where we will visit a peaceful garden, next to the City God Temple. The garden has five acres including a rockery, a chamber of ten thousand flowers, ponds, pavilions and towers. Then we fast-forward to the future on to the famous Oriental Pearl TV Tower, which built in 1994 once was the tallest building in China. There are great opportunities to take some panoramic shots of the city. You can also stop at the revolving restaurant located at 267m level. Finish the tour on the Nanjing Road, Shanghai’s main shopping street. (B,L,D)
Day 8. Shanghai
Our tour ends. Our driver will meet you in the hotel lobby with a “China & Beyond” signboard and take you to the airport to catch your flight home. (B)
