Xian

Xian is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China and it has held that position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history.

Xian is located in the northwest of China and lies on the Guanzhong Plain in central China, on a flood plain created by eight surrounding rivers and streams. The city borders the northern foot of the Qinling Mountains to the south, and the banks of the Wei River to the north. Hua Shan, one of the five sacred Taoist mountains, is located 100 km away to the east of the city.

Located in the centre of China, Xian has a continental monsoon climate. The summer is hot and wet while the winter is dry and cold. Autumn is cool and a good time for visiting Xian, with October being the high season.

Xian is mostly known for its Terracotta Army and for being the eastern terminus of the Silk Road. The city also has other important historical sites, such as the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, several burial mounds, tombs of the Zhou Dynasty kings, royal mausoleums and tombs from the Han Dynasty, numerous Tang Dynasty pagodas.
